2022 update from Monte "I still work as a disability representative helping those with poor health get Social Security disability. I was called to this work because my daughter, Suzy, was born with a birth defect and uses a wheelchair.
I'm fortunate that my health is excellent. My only issue is dealing with minor surgery every 3-4 months to remove skin cancer spots from the bald pate. I walk daily with neighbors. When I talk to people from other towns and states, I realize how lucky we were to grow up in Garnett. We were allowed to be ourselves and develop our talents, we grew up in a safe community that let us be a bit wild sometimes and as a class we have remained friends for life.

Info as of 2015 Monte got a journalism degree at KU then joined the Army Security Agency and learned Russian. He then went to West Germany to listen to the Russians in East Germany. After his discharge he got a master's degree at KU then worked for a trade magazine company in Chicago and lived there for 15 years.
Monte married Joyce in 1971. Their daughter, Suzy, was born with spina bifida and uses a wheelchair. That led Monte to start publications for the disabled. He later sold them but one is still being published.
He taught journalism at KU for four years and had three business of his own - a small publishing business, a wedding and portrait photography business and now an independent contractor business. He works for Social Security as a court reporter at disability hearings.
During his career, Monte has been able to see a lot of the world, including Third World countries like India, the Philippines and Kenya. He thinks every American should see how the truly poor struggle to survive so we could all be more grateful for our blessings.
Monte and his family live in Lawrence, KS. He enjoys fixing things around the house, playing the ukulele, watercolor painting, and fly fishing. He also volunteers at his church doing such things as communion for the home-bound.

Monte was born March 30, 1947. Below is his senior picture.

High School Memories
(written in 2015) "I'm often surprised when I talk with other people about their high school memories. Many times they didn’t like high school or their classmates. We had such a friendly, fun-loving class and we continue to care for each other. I like how we continue to get together, accept each other as we are and enjoy life. After getting to know some of you better as adults, I wish I had spent more time with all of my classmates. We were/are a wonderful group of people."
